The All-New 2020 Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid
Stopping for gas too often on a road trip can be annoying and add extra time to any journey. Ford is hoping to reduce how much you need to stop and fill up with the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid, which offers over 500-miles of EPA-estimated range when equipped with rear-wheel drive.
Extended driving range means you can drive from New York City to Washington D.C. or Los Angeles to Las Vegas without needing to ever stop for gas. And with improved fuel economy compared to other Explorer models, you’ll be saving money on fuel as well.
“Explorer is the ultimate family adventure vehicle – and fewer pit stops is one of the latest reasons why,” said Bill Gubing, Explorer chief engineer. “Explorer provides space for the whole family and their gear, it’s got great towing capability, and now it has range like no Explorer before.”
The EPA estimates the fuel economy for the rear-wheel-drive Explorer Limited Hybrid to be 27 mpg city/29 mpg highway/28mpg combined, and the four-wheel-drive version to be 23 mpg city/26 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. The four-wheel-drive Explorer Hybrid has an estimated 450+ miles of range.
You also don’t have to compromise on capability with the Explorer Limited Hybrid, as it can tow up to 5,000 pounds (the same as a 2019 Explorer with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine). That is 1,500 pounds more than the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and more than many other popular Hybrid SUVs.

The All-New 2020 Ford Explorer Arrives in Houston, TX
For 2020, Ford has completely redesigned America’s favorite SUV, the Explorer. The 2020 Ford Explorer has the model’s broadest lineup ever, with a new high-performance Explorer ST model and fuel-efficient Explorer Hybrid. The Explorer is the next model in Ford’s evolving SUV lineup, which includes the reinvented Expedition and all-new Escape.
Every new Ford Explorer, including the base, XLT, Limited and Platinum models, is built at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant. The 2020 Explorer returns to its rear-wheel drive roots, with available four-wheel drive across the lineup for all-weather driving. New features and technology make the all-new Explorer more comfortable and capable than ever.
The most exciting new Explorer model is the 2020 Ford Explorer ST, which has been engineered by the Ford Performance team with a specially tuned 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine that produces an impressive 400 hp and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. There is a standard four-wheel drive system and quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission for increased performance.
“There’s no mistaking its ST DNA,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief functional engineer. “It has a performance feel with sustained performance capability and wears an unmistakably ST appearance. More than anything, it’s just a hell of a lot of fun to drive.”
The all-new 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid features a 3.3-liter hybrid powertrain which produces a combined 318 horsepower and can provide over 500 miles of EPA-estimated range on the rear-wheel drive model. The liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery is built into the chassis, so it doesn’t cut into passenger or cargo space.
